Shocking Coaching Decision From Browns as They Sack Bernie Kosar Over 5-Figue Gambling

The former quarterback stated on Sunday that the Browns notified him of their decision to split ways and that it was apparently related to a wager he placed on Cleveland’s game versus the Steelers in the regular season. Former quarterback and Browns radio personality Bernie Kosar was fired on Sunday, per Cleveland.com, for betting on the Steelers’ regular-season finale. ESPN validated the information. Employees of the team are not allowed to wager on their matches.

The Browns selected Bernie Kosar, a Miami quarterback who won the national championship in 1983, in the 1985 draft. Until spending a year in Dallas and three years in Miami, he played for Cleveland for eight years before retiring in 1996.

Bernie Kosar sacked over a gambling incident?

Bernie Kosar made no effort to conceal his bet. He even made it public. He declared earlier this week on The Bernie Kosar Show With Hanford Dixon that he was wagering $19,000 on the Browns to defeat the Steelers on Sunday.

“Earlier this week we notified Bernie, that per league policy, we were required to remove him from our pregame radio coverage for the season finale after he violated the NFL gambling policy by placing a bet on an NFL game,” the statement reads, per Cleveland.com.

“We understand what Bernie means to this community and our history but as team contracted personnel hired to provide content on our media platforms, his bet was a violation of NFL rules and we must adhere to all NFL policy.”

Bernie Kosar has engaged in a variety of businesses after retiring. He owned the Florida Panthers in 2001, an AFL franchise in 2007, and donated his name to other real estate investment firms. Additionally, Kosar had a radio show and was employed as a consultant by the Cleveland Browns on October 17, 2009, a position he held for 13 years. He was let go on Sunday.
