Taylor Heinicke To Start, Sam Howell To Play In Week 18

The Washington Commanders are expected to turn back to quarterback Taylor Heinicke as the starter under center in the Week 18 regular season finale against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, but rookie Sam Howell is also slated to play in the game, marking the NFL debut for the fifth-rounder, according to a source. Per The Washington Post's Nicki Jhabvala, Howell is taking the first repetitions in practice on Wednesday. Carson Wentz got the start in Week 17 and didn't deliver, tossing three interceptions in a loss to the Cleveland Browns. The Commanders have nothing left to play for this year, so they'd like to get a small look at Howell. With both Heinicke and Howell set to play this weekend, neither will be worth looking at in DFS lineups or in season-long leagues.

Carson Wentz To Start Over Taylor Heinicke In Week 17

Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera has decided that quarterback Carson Wentz will start in Week 17 against the Cleveland Browns, according to sources. Taylor Heinicke will head back to the bench. Wentz broke his right ring finger in October and lost the starting job to Heinicke when he returned from Injured Reserve, but the Commanders are now 7-7-1 and are in danger of missing the playoffs if they continue to lose. Wentz started the first six games before getting hurt, completing 62.1 percent of his 232 attempts for 1,489 yards, 10 touchdowns and six interceptions for a QB rating of 84.1. The 29-year-old hasn't looked much better than Heinicke in 2022 and should be considered a low-end QB2 for those in superflex leagues. The return of Wentz should be good news for rookie receiver Jahan Dotson, who developed strong chemistry with Wentz over the summer.

Carson Wentz Activated From IR, Will Back Up Taylor Heinicke

The Washington Commanders activated quarterback Carson Wentz (finger) from Injured Reserve on Monday, and he'll now serve as the backup to Taylor Heinicke moving forward. With Heinicke playing well since Wentz landed on Injured Reserve due to a broken finger, Washington will continue starting Heinicke under center. The 29-year-old Wentz hasn't played since Week 6, and he required surgery to fix his broken right ring finger. Before his injury, Wentz had completed 62.1 percent of his 232 pass attempts for 1,489 yards, 10 touchdowns and six interceptions in six starts in his first year in D.C. He should only be rostered in deep two-QB leagues or dynasty/keeper leagues.

Taylor Heinicke To Remain Starting QB For Now

Washington Commanders quarterback Taylor Heinicke is expected to remain the starter even after Carson Wentz (finger) returns from injured reserve, according to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport. Heinicke has looked solid in Wentz's absence, completing 62 percent of his passes for 840 yards, five touchdowns, and four interceptions. All the while, he has led the Commanders to a 3-1 record over the course of his four starts. Until Wentz is activated, rookie Sam Howell will operate as Heinicke's backup, and there is the potential for him to see some snaps if Sunday's game against the Houston Texans gets out of hand.

Taylor Heinicke Will Start In Week 11

Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera announced on Wednesday that quarterback Taylor Heinicke will start in Week 11 against the Houston Texans. Carson Wentz (finger) has been cleared to start throwing, but the team hasn't designated him to return to practice from Injured Reserve. Wentz could end up taking over the starting role eventually, but with Heinicke leading the team to a 3-1 record as the starter, the Commanders aren't in any rush to remove Wentz from Injured Reserve. Heinicke is a gritty and tough football player that his teammates have rallied behind. The 29-year-old signal-caller has thrown for 840 yards, five touchdowns and four interceptions on 121 attempts in his four starts this year. He'll make for a midrange QB2 for fantasy managers this week against the one-win Texans.

Taylor Heinicke Expected To Remain The Starter?

Many around the league expect the Washington Commanders to stick with quarterback Taylor Heinicke as the starter after beating the previously undefeated Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night, at least for the short term. The team has a decision to make with Carson Wentz (finger) returning to health. Heinicke is 8-4 in his last 12 starts, including 3-1 this year. Young players have gravitated toward him because of his fiery personality and no-fear attitude, and head coach Ron Rivera knows about the locker-room support for Heinicke. But the team also values Wentz's skills and toughness. He's healing as scheduled and could be ready as soon as Week 11 against the Houston Texans. It would be a surprise if Heinicke didn't get another start this weekend, even if Wentz is fully healthy.
