Irv Smith Jr. Officially Activated From Injured Reserve

Minnesota Vikings tight end Irv Smith Jr. (ankle) has been activated from injured reserve. Through seven games earlier this season, Smith caught 22 passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns. However, after Smith landed on IR, Minnesota went out and acquired T.J. Hockenson from the Lions. Thus, Smith will fill a depth role for the Vikings and is not on the fantasy radar in Week 18.

Irv Smith Jr. Set To Be Activated From Injured Reserve

The Minnesota Vikings plan to activate tight end Irv Smith Jr. (ankle) from Injured Reserve, according to a source. Smith last played in Week 8 due to a high-ankle sprain, but he should be active for the Week 18 regular season finale against the Chicago Bears and will be a big boost for the offense as they head into the postseason. The 24-year-old caught 22 of his 33 targets for 168 yards and two touchdowns in seven games before getting injured. Since Smith's injury, Minnesota traded for T.J. Hockenson, and Hockenson should remain the unquestioned top pass-catching tight end for the Vikings heading into the playoffs. Smith should be avoided in DFS and season-long leagues this weekend and throughout the postseason, but he could be a sneaky red-zone weapon for quarterback Kirk Cousins.

Irv Smith Jr. Designated To Return From Injured Reserve

Minnesota Vikings tight end Irv Smith Jr. (ankle) has been designated to return from injured reserve. The veteran tight end was placed on the injured reserve list after the Week 8 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals because of an ankle injury. Smith is averaging only 5.7 half-point PPR fantasy points per game, scoring 8.8 or fewer fantasy points in all but one contest this season. Meanwhile, the Vikings traded for T.J. Hockenson after Smith got hurt. Even if the former second-round pick is placed on the active roster this week, Smith has no fantasy value as long as Hockenson is healthy. Fantasy players can leave for the former Alabama tight end on the waiver wire in all redraft leagues.

Irv Smith Jr. Close To Returning From Injured Reserve

Minnesota Vikings tight end Irv Smith Jr. (ankle) is close to returning from injured reserve. According to Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell, Smith is close to returning from an ankle injury. The 24-year-old had been sidelined since Week 8 after suffering a high-ankle sprain in late October. He caught 22 passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns before the injury. Smit could participate in drills as soon as next week. With the Vikings acquiring tight end T.J. Hockenson from the Lions in the middle of the season, Smith's fantasy upside is limited and is mainly a stash in dynasty leagues.

Irv Smith Jr. Going On Injured Reserve

The Minnesota Vikings placed tight end Irv Smith Jr. (ankle) on Injured Reserve on Tuesday, which will keep him out for at least the next four games. He's expected to be sidelined eight to 10 weeks after suffering a high-ankle sprain in the Week 8 win over the Arizona Cardinals. On top of the injury, the Vikings went out and acquired T.J. Hockenson from the Detroit Lions on Tuesday, so he'll now step in as the team's top pass-catching tight end with Smith sidelined. The 24-year-old Smith might not play again in 2022, so he's not worth holding in single-year fantasy leagues, especially with Hockenson now in town. Smith missed all of last season due to injury and might finish 2022 with just seven games played for the Vikings.

Irv Smith Jr. Suffers High-Ankle Sprain

The initial belief is that Minnesota Vikings tight end Irv Smith Jr. (ankle) suffered a high-ankle sprain in the Week 8 win over the Arizona Cardinals, according to sources. The Vikings are still sorting out Smith's timetable, but there's a good chance that he'll miss some game action moving forward. High-ankle sprains can sideline players anywhere from two to six weeks, so fantasy managers should expect to be without Smith at least for Week 9 against the Washington Commanders. The 24-year-old caught all four of his targets for 28 yards before leaving on Sunday. Johnny Mundt, who caught his only pass for a touchdown, could become an interesting touchdown-dependent TE2 streamer if Smith misses any time, but Jacob Hollister could be involved as well at the position in Minnesota.

Irv Smith Jr. To Have An MRI

Minnesota Vikings tight end Irv Smith Jr. (ankle) will need an MRI after injuring his ankle late in Sunday's win over the Cardinals. Smith didn't impress in Week 8, amassing only four receptions for 28 yards. Overall, the 24-year-old hasn't done much on the fantasy end this season outside his two touchdown catches. While managers can look to Smith as a desperation fantasy option from week to week based on his small upside, he's easily replaceable if he can't go in Week 9 versus the Commanders.

Vikings Confident Irv Smith Jr. Will Play In Week 1

Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell said on Monday that nothing has happened to alter the original timetable on tight end Irv Smith Jr. (thumb) returning for Week 1 against the Green Bay Packers. "If anything, I feel as confident as ever that we'll have him," O'Connell said. Fantasy managers will have a better idea of Smith's status for this Sunday when the team issues their first injury report on Wednesday. The 24-year-old should be active, though, and he's primed for a big year as the team's top pass-catching tight end after he missed all of 2021 due to injury. Smith is a solid backup tight end in fantasy, and he'll likely have TE1 streaming intrigue in the right matchups in 2022 in what should be a pass-happy Vikings offense.

Irv Smith Jr. Expected To Be Ready For Week 1

Minnesota Vikings tight end Irv Smith Jr. (thumb) is expected to be ready for Week 1 of the regular season after his Aug. 1 thumb injury, and he said he's returned to catching balls over the last few days. "It feels good. I'm getting back in the groove of things. I've been out a few weeks now, so just getting back into football conditioning," Smith said. The 24-year-old didn't play at all last year after he had surgery for an injured meniscus in his right knee, but he'll be the team's top pass-catching tight end in 2022 and is intriguing as a TE2 with upside in fantasy football. In 13 games played in 2020, Smith had 30 catches on 43 targets for 365 yards and five touchdowns.

Irv Smith Jr. To Practice This Week

Minnesota Vikings tight end Irv Smith Jr. (thumb) is expected to get back on the practice field this week, according to head coach Kevin O'Connell. The Vikings appear confident that Smith will be ready to suit up for Week 1. This is great to see considering Smith hasn't played in a game since early January of 2021. He is expected to be the primary tight end once he gets back to playing. However, Smith has very little time under O'Connell's system, so he could come out of the gate slowly. There's some TE1 upside here, but he should be considered a TE2 to begin the season.

Irv Smith Jr. On Track To Play In Week 1

Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell said on Thursday that tight end Irv Smith Jr. (thumb), who had thumb surgery earlier this summer, is on track to play in Week 1 against the division-rival Green Bay Packers. Smith missed all of last season after having surgery to fix the meniscus in his right knee, but he's expected to be ready to go for the start of the regular season. How effective he'll be and how much he'll be on the field is a different story. The fact that he's missed most of training camp to this point isn't a great sign either. In his two seasons played in the NFL, the 24-year-old has 66 catches (90 targets) for 676 yards and seven touchdowns, but he could break out in 2022 if he stays healthy as the team's top pass-catching tight end. Consider Smith a TE2 in fantasy with upside.
